What to Wear to Acupuncture

WHAT TO WEAR TO ACUPUNCTURE

What should I wear to My acupuncture Session?

6 Tips From a Leading Acupuncture Clinic in New York, NY

Wondering how to dress for your upcoming acupuncture appointment? You aren't alone. The truth is, what you should wear will vary depending on your acupuncturist. At Gotham Holistic Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine, we provide everything you need to enjoy a comfortable session. If access is needed to a part of your body that is covered by your clothing, you will be asked to undress to your comfort level and a drape will be provided. Many people find it more comfortable to disrobe for sessions so that clothes are not constricting the body in any way. Wearing clothes that are easy to get on and off will ensure that you have an easy transition at the beginning and end of your treatment.

What Kind of Clothes Should I Wear?

If your acupuncturist prefers you to wear clothing during your treatment, here are some guidelines to keep in mind:

Wear loose-fitting clothing. Avoid anything too tight or constricting.

Wear clothing that can be easily rolled up, particularly if you are wearing pants or long sleeves. This will allow the acupuncturist to access the areas being treated.

Areas that commonly need to be accessed include: from the knees down, from the elbow to the fingertips, and the neck and shoulders.

If full access to your back is needed, you will likely be asked to remove your top or shirt.

If you have long hair, you may want to tie it back to avoid it getting in the way.

If you are coming from work or otherwise cannot wear appropriate clothing to the appointment, bring some loose shorts and a tank or short sleeve shirt to change into for your session.

What Kinds of Clothes Shouldn't I Wear?

Conversely, there are a few things you should avoid wearing to your acupuncture appointment to ensure a safe and comfortable experience. Here are 3 things not to wear to acupuncture:

Tight clothing.

Metal jewelry.

Perfume or scented lotions.

Recommended Clothing

Loose clothing is recommended when receiving acupuncture treatment to allow easy access to the treatment area. Some clothing options to consider wearing would be:

Shorts

Sweatpants

Sweatshirts/Hoodie

Loose T-Shirts

Be sure to wear comfortable underwear during your appointment. Avoid sports bras as they can restrict movement and cause pain when you move.

Acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been used for centuries to treat a variety of ailments such as acute and chronic pain, to general health issues like menstrual pain, and even Fertility. The practice involves the insertion of thin needles into the skin at specific points on the body. These points are believed to correspond to different pathways of Qi, a type of energy, and to connect to different organ systems and functions. By stimulating these points, practitioners believe that acupuncture can promote balance within the body, leading to improved health. From a Western standpoint, acupuncture works by promoting improved circulation to local tissues, and by regulating the nervous system.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can acupuncture be done through clothing?

Acupuncturists often need to access areas under your clothes for treatments, but you'll be properly draping so that only small portions of skin are exposed.

  • Do you take your clothes off for acupuncture?

The acupuncturist will make sure you're comfortable and may need to access areas under your clothes, but they'll drape it so that only small portions of skin are exposed.

  • Can you wear leggings to acupuncture?

When choosing what to wear to your acupuncture session, it is typically a good rule of thumb to wear bottoms that allow access to your knees. Unless your leggings or tights allow for this, it would be recommended to wear a pair of loose pants that can be rolled up, or bring a pair of shorts with you.

  • What shoes should I wear to my acupuncture session?

Consider wearing flip flops or sandals to your acupuncture session so you're able remove them without any trouble. It's also a good idea if the shoes have an easy zip-up design, because this will make getting into and out of these types of footwear easier when it comes time for treatment!
