Acupuncture for knee joint pain in New York, NY

NYC Knee Acupuncture Clinic

Knee pain can cause discomfort and difficulty with walking, climbing stairs, and participating in many daily and recreational activities. It is a common condition that can result from injuries, muscular imbalances, structural damage or changes within the knee joint, as well as other underlying conditions like arthritis. At Gotham Holistic Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine, we offer custom tailored acupuncture and electroacupuncture treatments for effective knee pain relief, reduction in inflammation, and improvement in mobility.

Common Causes of Knee Pain

Knee pain is a common complaint with many different possible causes. Acute cases of knee pain may be due to an injury; either during a fall, collision, or while playing sports. Some of the causes of chronic knee pain include:

Osteoarthritis is a type of arthritis that involves the wearing down of cartilage in a joint which can result in pain, inflammation, swelling, and decreases mobility

Bursitis is caused by irritation of the bursae in the knee, which normally helps to decrease friction in the knee joint.

Iliotibial band syndrome is caused by an inflamed band of tissue which runs down the side of the thigh (this is the iliotibial band) and attaches to the knee joint. When inflamed, the ITB pulls with more force on the attachment at the knee, causing pain there.

Meniscus tear happens when the cartilage in the joint is torn, and can then become stuck in the joint during movement. This often causes a “catching” sensation during movement of the knee.

Patellar tendonitis involves inflammation of an important tendon of the knee. This is often caused by repeated jumping.

Patellofemoral pain syndrome is also known as “runners knee” and can be caused by muscle imbalances to misalign the patella, or when repeated stress irritates the patella.

When To Try Acupuncture for Knee Pain

For all knee pain conditions we will work with you and your medical doctors to determine whether an integrative approach is necessary for resolving your pain. If you would like to avoid surgery, are recovering from knee surgery, or would like to try a non-invasive option, acupuncture is an excellent treatment option.

At Gotham Holistic, we utilize a combination of acupuncture in the style of Traditional Chinese Medicine, electroacupuncture, and topical herbal medicinals to address a range of knee pain conditions. All treatments are customized to the individual and aim to promote healing in the area of pain, as well as addressing any issues nearby that may contribute to knee pain, and also provide whole-body (systemic) pain relief and reduction of inflammation for long-lasting relief.

Some benefits of acupuncture for knee pain include:

Release of powerful natural pain killers such as endorphins

Release of natural anti-inflammatory agents

Improved circulation to areas of pain and injury for accelerated healing

Release of trigger points and adhesions for improved mobility
